that also helps prioritize the compromises. If it helps, I also use a D200. If you're all about interiors and architecture, and have no interest in flowers. If you lean more towards portraiture than sports, that skews the thinking one way. That will help you to decide which compromises you can live with now, knowing that you'll remedy that situation next with another choice.

Don't look at this as your only lens - look at this as your first lens. The 24-85 will often feel not wide enough (there's a huge difference betweeen 18 and 24mm on the wide end, and 16mm is even better, that way). The 18-200 will feel incredibly useful, but sometimes a little too slow or soft at the long end in lower light. The 17-55 will frequently feel too short (and too heavy!) lovely as it is. In either case, I'd probably spend another $100 for the 50/1.8, since it's nice to have at least one fast lens, and that one - despite a few minor issues - is an obvious choice.Single lens solutions are always a compromise. So that you can get a better sense of what you ultimately will want (since, I guarantee you WILL want more as time goes by).The 16-85 VR or the 18-200 VR would probably top my list if I had to only have the ONE lens. But since you didn't bring that up, I'm thinking it's a little early in the curve for you to have a solid sense of that, and you truly do need a generalized, all-purpose sort of lens. Normally, we'd get into discussions about how you'll be shooting and what sort of subject matter you like. Here's one taken with the Tamron 17-50mm yesterday (hope it shows up):

If you feel confident to focus manually, you can consider manual focus AI/AIS lenses as well. I bought my 85mm for just $150, and it works like clockwork. Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 More expensive than the 50/1.8, but then it's a much better lens. Image quality is good, although bokeh can be questionable sometimes. Very cheap portrait/short telephoto lens. Slower aperture than the Tamron, but longer reach as well as VR. If you're lucky and get a good copy, the quality is stellar. I could probably live with any of them as my only lens on my D80 (which has the same sensor as the D200) or S5 (which has the same body as the D200:
